4 Delicious Ways to Serve Macarons ft. Our March Flavours

The weather is getting warmer and we’re super excited to welcome Spring! I’m sure we are all itching to go out and soak up some sun. The pandemic has made it difficult to enjoy social activities with friends and family. One of many experiences we miss is catching a taste of the different ways to enjoy desserts throughout the city of Toronto. Luckily, the pandemic also sparks more creativity and interest to how you can fulfill your dessert needs in the comfort of your own home. Since our favourite dessert is macarons, we thought we would share 4 delicious ways to serve our March flavours to possibly shake up your routine.

  1. Afternoon Tea at Home

What you will need: Macarons, scones, jam, cream, tea of your choice, cookies of your choice, sandwiches of your choice, optional 3-tier stand, cutlery, tea cups, optional flowers and décor.

Afternoon tea is a British food tradition. This food tradition is described as sitting down for an afternoon treat with small finger foods, pastries and snacks along with a cup of tea. Specifically, sandwiches, scones and cake paired with tea is served around 4pm.  It may be difficult to go out for afternoon tea with your family, friends and loved ones during a pandemic, but it is possible to recreate the experience right in the comfort of your own home.

We purchased our delicious savoury foods for our afternoon tea from T-buds. T-buds offer individual Afternoon tea boxes at a reasonable price for both pickup and delivery. Our March macarons make a perfect dessert topper to pair up with this dainty and classy experience. In this particular set, we purposely left out a slice of cake; a common element amongst afternoon tea sets. Our Birthday Cake macaron is a perfect alternative that offers a less heavy, but equally as delicious option for those that prefer the quick bite. It is made with vanilla funfetti cake with chocolate cream cheese frosting. Sprinkles are added on top to stay true to its traditional look and flavour.

2. Macaron Trifle inspired by Donna Hay

What you will need: Macarons, jello powder, water, fruit, powdered sugar and whipped cream

Side note: These are the ingredients we used while recreating the recipe. Feel free to play around with it to your liking.

Donna Hay’s Strawberry & Vanilla Macaron Trifle recipe is an interesting way to serve a macaron in a perfect single portion. It also gives a creative twist to dress up a dessert to be shared and passed around. Or, enjoyed in quarantine after a lovely home cooked 3 course meal. Inspired by her recipe, we decided to recreate it to suit our Mango Passionfruit macaron for the month of March. Our Mango and Passionfruit macaron is a returning favourite.  It has mango and passionfruit buttercream swirled together between the chewy shells. Real fruit purees and fresh mango chunks occupy the inside to give bursts of sweet citrus in every bite. We love the simplicity and different dessert textures of the recipe, so we played around with it to suit the sweet and citrus flavour of the macaron. In addition, we added kiwis to garnish the whipped cream. Kiwis blend in well with the sweet citrus flavour palette, and they also provide more colour to the presentation. Other garnishes we recommend are orange zest strings and blueberries.

Furthermore, an alternative macaron we recommend amongst our March flavours for this particular recreation is our Strawberry Lemon Cheesecake macaron. It consists of strawberry-lemon buttercream, freeze-dried strawberry, a slice of housemade lemon cheesecake and chunks of graham cracker crumble. All it’s textures are balanced out with the strawberry jello base. The kiwi garnishes contribute to bringing out it’s natural tartness.

3. Surprise Dessert Box

What you will need: Macarons, cake slice, strawberry pocky, oatmeal cookies covered in chocolate, chocolate pretzels, wine gummies and fruit slices.

Everyone loves surprises! Especially edible and sweet surprises. You heard of cheese boards and edible arrangements, why not a dessert box filled with your favourite desserts? Our March flavours make the perfect filler to satisfy any sweet tooth. We constructed this particular arrangement around our Piggy Bar macaron by taking it’s colour scheme and flavour into consideration. The Social Blend Piggy Bar macaron is inspired by a Korean ice cream bar of the same name. It is a nostalgic childhood treat to many members of our team, which easily makes it our favourite amongst all the March flavours. This childhood treat consists of milk ice cream flavoured buttercream with house-made strawberry jam in the center, dipped in chocolate and wrapped in a house mix chocolate and peanut crumble on the outside. The pink colour and chocolate peanut wrapping caught our attention. Therefore, we chose the rest of the box filling around themes of chocolate and the macaron’s vibrant pink colour, starting with a chocolate cake slice in the middle, and working our way around it.

Note: When choosing your delicious treats, take into consideration how well some treats are able to cover the area of the box. Avoid any extremely sticky or saucey finishes without proper wrapping.

4. Latte Macaron Dip!

If you follow our socials, you will recognize our classic photos of a macaron dipped in a velvety latte. This is one of our favourite ways to eat our macarons. Not to mention a great way to sneak in a quick dessert during our morning coffee. Our coconut latte macaron for March makes a perfect pairing with a hot latte. It is made with a coconut anglaise and espresso pâte à bombe swirled together around a coffee ganache, wrapped in shredded coconut around the sides.  All finished with a heart on the top because…. well, coffee is love. This gives an extra kick to all the coffee lovers out there. The latte definitely helps strengthen the espresso features of the macaron. The shredded coconut provides a nice finishing texture.

Alternatively, our Honey Date macaron makes a fine choice as well with a latte. Buttercream with whole dates cooked in syrup and pureed, with honey caramel in the center. Toasted honey walnuts on the outside provide a more nutty sweetness. This is a great alternative to those who don’t necessarily enjoy the deep espresso taste, but still appreciate a warmer pairing. Both March flavours dipped into the milk texture of the latte diminishes the sweetness of the macaron even more, which lets you enjoy a sweet morning without a bloated sugar rush.
